Privacy Policy for Uncle Hangul (한글아저씨)

Uncle Hangul (한글아저씨) is a personal publication about learning Korean, operated by a single individual. This policy describes exactly what happens to data when you visit https://unclehangul.com or use the interactive tools hosted here.

The short version: there are no accounts, no logins, and no newsletter. Nothing on this site asks you to identify yourself. The only personal information held is whatever you choose to put in an email.

1. Information collected automatically

Like most websites, this site records standard technical information in server logs: IP address, browser type and version, operating system, referring and exit pages, and date and time of access. This data is used to keep the site running, diagnose errors, and understand which articles people read.

2. Google AdSense and advertising cookies

This site uses Google AdSense to display advertising. Google, as a third-party vendor, uses cookies to serve ads. Google's use of advertising cookies — including the DART cookie — enables it and its partners to serve ads based on your visits to this site and other sites on the internet.

You can opt out of personalized advertising at any time through Google's ads settings. Third-party vendors and ad networks may also be using cookies on this site; their use is governed by their own privacy policies.

If you are visiting from a region covered by the GDPR or similar regulation, a consent message will appear before personalized advertising cookies are set, and your choice is recorded and respected.

3. Analytics

Google Analytics is used to measure aggregate traffic — page views, session duration, approximate location at the country or city level, and which links and tools are used. 4. Data stored in your browser

When you mark an article or widget as helpful or not helpful, that choice is saved in your browser's local storage so the page remembers it on your next visit. This value stays on your device. Clearing your browser data removes it.

The "Listen" buttons in Hangul Play use your browser's built-in speech synthesis. The text is spoken by your own device and is not sent to this site's servers.

5. Data entered into the tools

Some tools on this site process text you type in.

The Hangul Play widgets — name conversion, city names, and the jamo builder — run entirely in your browser. Nothing you type there leaves your device.

The address conversion tools send your query to this site's server in order to return a result. Where verification against an official database is required, the query is forwarded to the Korean Ministry of the Interior and Safety road-name address service (juso.go.kr). Results are cached briefly on the server to reduce repeat lookups, and queries are not stored in any long-term database or linked to you. Please do not enter sensitive personal information into these tools.

6. Email

If you write to the address below, your email address and the contents of your message are received and stored in an ordinary email inbox for as long as needed to reply and keep context. Messages are not shared with third parties, not added to any mailing list, and not used for marketing.

7. Children

This site is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from them.

8. Your choices

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, opt out of personalized advertising through Google's ads settings, install the Google Analytics opt-out add-on, or clear local storage to remove saved reactions. None of these will prevent you from reading the articles or using the widgets.

9. Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the revised version will be posted here with an updated date at the top. Material changes will be reflected in the summary above rather than buried in a section.
